My art is very direct. Everyone can immediately see what it’s about: worlds that are too seldom spoken of, but which everyone in this world is intimately connected to.
Halloween in the Spring. Nothing is what it seems. This is a party
of course, we laugh and we dance, not in the dark but with the
dark. Birth, love, death, is that all there is? The art I feel connected
to is mostly outside the Western tradition: from Japanese brush
drawings to Mexican folk art, from tantric temple statues to
prehistoric cave paintings… To me, these are not cultural fossils but
living dragons.
The exhibition also features events by performing artists from the
neighborhood, the city and the world. This small festival can
provide visitors with a surprising experience: is this all possible too?

Central European Folk Jazz
Akos Laki (1967, Senta, Yugoslavia) studied classical clarinet in Novi Sad (Yugoslavia), jazz saxophone in Budapest, and jazz saxophone and bass clarinet in Rotterdam. In 1983 and 1986 he won the national competitions for clarinet in Skopje (Macedonia) and Ljubljana (Croatia); in 1993 he was a finalist of the international jazz concours in Katowicze (Poland). Akos plays with his own groups Carlama Orkestar, Laki Latino, Akos Laki Trio/Quartet, Double B and Double Band with Stansilav Mitrovic, Klez-tetics, Global Village Orchestra, Panchito, Rhoda Scott–Akos Laki Trio, Suzanna Lubrano Band, etc. He has also played in several musicals.
Stanislav Mitrovic (1963, Belgrade) studied saxophone and bass clarinet at the Rotterdam conservatory from 1988-1995. He played with the Mijke Loeven band, the Matilde Santing band, the Amsterdam klezmer band Klezmokum, the Burton Greene Quartet, etc. He also plays regularly in the Netherlands and abroad with his own jazz quartet, together with gitarist Ratko Zjaca.
Akos Laki & Stanislav Mitrovic Double B won first prize at the Dutch Jazz Concours in Leeuwarden in 1996.

Playful Modern Jazz
Jos Valster (klarinetten en saxofoons) speelt “gewoon lekkere muziek die goed klinkt: precies dat wat je zocht terwijl we toch ons eigen geluid blijven houden.” In gezellige bands zoals de Gehoorgangsters, de Gezelligheidsvereniging, Trio Taante Truus, Toftet en de Tentband (al vele jaren het vaste begeleidingsorkest van het wereldcirkus van het Rotterdams Volkstheater) is hij te horen op festivals, openingen, poeziemiddagen en begrafenissen: “het hoort er allemaal bij... kalipso, oude swing, mooie romantiese balades, ziegeunerklanken, klezmer, jazz, rhythm and blues…” Ook maakt hij geluidscollages voor theater- of dansproducties en cirkusacts. En verder “werk ik graag samen met mensen uit andere disciplines: schilders, beeldhouwers, fietsenmakers en hersenchirurgen.”
Frenk van Meeteren (gitaar) is een oude bekende ook in de folk en jazzscene: hij speelde in de Crooks (tournees in Rusland en Hongarije in de jaren 80), in de folkgroep King’s Galliard (jaren 70-80, prijswinnaars Letterkenny Folk festival). Daarnaast in de legendarische band de Gangbusters die o.a. veel speelden op de Boulevard of Broken Dreams (nu de Parade). En vergeet ook niet de Gehoorgangsters uit Rotterdam...

Bruno Ferro Xavier da Silva combines his bass guitar with bow, sampling and various effects. You can label his music as funk, jazz, hip hop, avant-garde, electronic, ambient, progressive rock, experimental, drum ’n bass... Fronting different bands (Stöma, Doodoo’s Coffee, Doktor Schnitt, Mulabanda, WEGO), being active in the impro scene and in the clubcircuit and touring around the world he has become a well-rounded artist. In 2011 he won the public prize of the prestigious Jur Naessens Muziekprijs 2011, one of the biggest Dutch music prizes for young and innovative talent.
VPRO 3voor12: “Bassist Bruno werkt met samples. Hij maakt bijvoorbeeld
een strijkpartij met zijn strijkstok over zijn bassnaren, bewerkt dat ter plekke
met effecten en ‘loopt’ de boel. Opeens zijn er gitaren, strijkers en gekke geluiden
tevoorschijngetoverd uit al die pedaaltjes. Zo bouwt Bruno ter plekke de composities,
laagje voor laagje, waar de band overheen, onder- en tussendoor speelt.
Alsof er een heel orkest op het podium staat.”

Harry Merry
David Fagan (Rats On Rafts): “Harry Merry is de meest originele muzikant die in Nederland rondloopt. Zijn liedjes zijn eigenlijk popliedjes, maar hij verpakt ze heel raar. Zijn favoriete band is The Beatles maar hij houdt ook van glamrock, moderne r&b en obscure sixties beatbandjes. Harry is een van de meest aparte figuren die ik ken. Als hij op het podium staat voelt hij zich volgens mij vrijer en dan kan hij meer zichzelf zijn. De meeste mensen met enige smaak kunnen zien dat het iets unieks is. Omdat de hele band fan is, hebben we hem een keer of zeven meegenomen als voorprogramma. Maar eigenlijk zouden wij in zijn voorprogramma moeten staan.”

Het Soefisme, de mystieke weg naar de eenheid. Onder begeleiding van de grote soefimeester Hazrate SafiAliShah II (Sinds 1993 hoofd en spiritueel leider, Pir, van de Ne’matollahi SafiAliShahi Soefi Orde), krijg je een unieke kans om een spirituele beleving vanuit “Zikr en Sema”, mee te maken, een actieve meditatievorm begeleid door traditionele livemuziek. Het energieke karakter van de Zikr en Sema helpt vrij te worden van gedachten en het hart te openen, waardoor er ruimte ontstaat voor het Goddelijke. Meer info over NSSO op de website: www.nsso.info
Soefisme vindt zijn oorsprong in het vroegere Perzië. Het uitgangspunt van deze eeuwenoude traditie is liefde, menselijkheid, begrip en harmonie. Soefi’s zoeken het Hart, de Eenheid en de Schoonheid. Aan de hand van een meester, de Pir of Sheikh, trachten ze de weg van onwetendheid naar kennis bewandelen. Deze weg loopt, via het onderzoeken van het beperkte zelf - het onware ego - naar het verder zuiveren van het innerlijk - het onbegrensde zelf - naar God.
Workshop derwishdans, Maryam Linders
De derwishdans is een bijzondere vorm van meditatie die tijdens de “Zikr en Sema” spontaan kan onstaan. Het is een dans van schoonheid en harmonie.
Speciaal voor deze bijzondere soefi bijeenkomst is het al mogelijk om kennis te maken met de derwishdans, die de geest verruimt en het hart opent. Maryam Linders zal deze inspirerende workshop begeleiden. Door haar jarenlange beoefening van en lesgeven in deze vorm van dansmeditatie, weet zij de betekenis en vorm aan iedereen op begrijpelijke wijze over te dragen.

Na de Zikr en Sema wordt er een vegetarische maaltijd geserveerd.
i.v.m. het actieve karakter van de meditatie wordt aangeraden ruim zittende kleding te dragen.

VDRSH is more than just an onomatopoeia. It's a cauldron of international elements mixed with extremely dangerous influences, and of course large doses of madness. The taste is surprisingly tasty. Drum and bass landscapes, gypsy weddings, experimental latin fiestas, it's all in there.
